In this post you'll find all of my top tips for travelling on a budget. From what you need to do before you go, to when you’re already abroad: travel tips, money saving tips, budget travel tips, free things to do, cheap places to visit and much more all while having the time of your life exploring!

1. Carefully pick the time of year

Going in peak season isn't always necessary! Obviously this will depend on holiday allowances you get from work but try and go at the end or start of high season - it tends to be slightly cheaper, places will be opening up and flights are becoming more frequent. This is also weather dependant and event specific, for example if you want to see the blossom in Japan, you can only go in the Spring, so a little planning and saving does help for trips like this.

2. Find the hidden gem

Popular places are popular for a reason - they either have a historical or cultural element which brings people to the area however that does not mean you can't find the hidden gem just around the corner! Say you go island hopping in Greece - pick that restaurant recommended by a local, say on the lesser known island and don't get bogged down in all of the tourist spots! So although the destination might be bustling, choose a more authentic experience and it'll be cheaper.

3. Pick your spot

You'd be amazed on how many places there are to see! When people think of travelling around Europe they typically think Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens but there's loads of other cities and countries to explore. A great way to find these is on google of all places! I get myself on google maps and check out a country, see what's there in the attractions tab, see the best restaurants and places to stay. This can be a great way to find somewhere cheap but not less amazing.

4. Plan, plan and plan

The more planning you can do in advance the cheaper your trip will be - whether this be flights, hotels, excursions or insurance, you can also then be able to split the cost as you'll only need to pay a deposit, giving you more time to save! This is also very relevant for National park passes or travel passes as these you may need to book months in advance to be able to get in.

5 . Go by recommendations

If someone has had a good experience in a hotel or restaurant I always mark it in my google maps and save for later. This is a great way of knowing you're more likely to have a good time than risking it someone unknown and wasting your money. However that's not to say spontaneity has to go out of the window! Some of the best places to have eaten are based of google reviews...

6. Don't be picky!

There is so much inspiration out there, from luxury hotels to hiring yachts, that perfect view point to incredible experiences. Now all of this is completely fine if your budget allows however if not, be realistic, spend money on things that mean the most to you! If you really want to go on safari then spend the money but save on other things like the flights or the hotels. Being picky do not mean missing out on those memorable moments.

7. Remember the small things

This sort of comes into the planning section above but remember to include the small things in your budget, you'd be surprised how many people forget transport! If you know you'll be getting buses or taxi's around do a quick search on the average cost so you can factor this in. It's not just the big purchases like your flights and hotel you need to book. Even the small things like city tax!

8. Bring your own

For a weekend away I'm sure to bring as much as my baggage will allow in terms of the right equipment, even down to the snacks! By being prepared you're less likely to spend money on things you don't need or already have a home (but didn't bring) Looking up the weather and what type of outfit you'll need for your activities will help save some money.

9. Travel times

If you are planning or a larger trip or want to make long journeys in your trip, see if you can travel overnight, it saves wasting a day or spending money on accommodation you don't need!

10. Conversion rates

I hardly bring cash will me anymore when I travel unless I know ATM's or card payments are less likely but if you are taking cash with you, keep an eye on conversion rates. If you know what a good rate is then you can keep an eye out for when it might pop up, don't be in a rush and buy it at the airport!

11. Do something free!

You don't have to do paid things all of the time! There are plenty of free things to do when you get to your destination, instead of getting a bus or a taxi walk instead - you never know what you may find along the way! Walk around the place and see if their a museum, most of these are free on certain days. Go to a local market or tourist information there may be an event happening just around the corner.

12. Phone = data

Now this can get very pricey depending on where you are and for how long you're staying and it's something people always forget until the last moment (I've even forgotten right up until getting off the plane and realising I have no signal...) So take a look at your phone plan to see if they have any deals or add on's for data. If not give them a call as they may offer you something unique. If there's no luck there get a local SIM card, this can be cheaper as it's based on their prices! Or take a look at Airalo, you get to keep your SIM but gives you access to loads of eSIM's for your desired country.

13. Go DIY

That package deal might not be as budget friendly as you may think... by splitting up that planned tour by using public transport, bringing your own lunch and entry ticket could save you a lot of money and if done in advance too. However on the other hand by packaging items together it can save you money but booking your hotel and flights or flights and car together.

14. Travel with others

Now a solo trip is good for the soul, but it can be an expensive way to travel. Go grab your friends or family and go on that travel, sharing the cost goes a long way and you'll be able to get group discounts.

15. Once you have your budget stick to it

It can be so tempting when you're travelling to pick up that cute bowl or go on that tour but if you haven't budgeted for it then you may have to go without. However I do always give myself a small margin of error, but this is only for emergencies however if I'm on my last day and I happen to see something I like... It may be coming home with me.
